本书每一章前半部分是盖恩夫人对她两本著作（《简易祈祷法》和《雅歌释义》）一些章节的引用和说明。其中《简易祈祷法》引用章节是依据1704年的初版而重新翻译的；后半部分是“引述权威”，盖恩夫人援引历代奥秘派作者及长期公认的圣徒们的著作，请审查她的人来查验自己所写的经历和用语表述是否与那些圣徒的著作相吻合。译者能力精力有限，只选译“引述权威”中部分段落，以及盖恩夫人对权威著作所作的一些长篇幅的注解。
本书中，【】和（）内均为盖恩夫人本人对文章段落所作的注解。译注均以脚注形式出现。另外，译者对原文意思理解没有把握之处，均在括号内附上英文原文，以助于读者斟酌理解。下面标有虚线的词语原文中没有，是译者为了更充分表达出原文意思而加上的，但又不能完全确定原文有这个意思，特加上虚线。
